An Unholy Alliance

I have no problem with legitimate, political discourse. After all, we are a political nation. It is our great democracy that allows a thorough vetting of our important issues. But what happens when the issues take a back seat to a separate agenda? I contend that the continual barrage of criticism regarding the Iraq War directed towards George Bush is based on a domestic agenda that has nothing at all to do with foreign policy, and that is dangerous.

George Bush is bad. He is evil. He is a cowboy. He is Hitler. He is the worst President...EVER!! He has perpetuated an illegal and immoral war. Congress, cut the funding. That is the mantra of the left and the left wing press. But after the rant, the left offers no alternative whatsoever to the Iraq issue other than cut and run. That is because they don't care about Iraq. What they care about is abortion, gun control, feminism, stem cell research, rights for illegal aliens, socialized medicine and wealth redistribution. And oh yes, the war in Iraq is bad. Forget that George Bush led this nation through the 9/11 crisis, and into the best economy in years.

America, wake up and smell the coffee. Although it received some coverage, Iranian President Ahmandinejad's visit to Venezuela was pushed to fourth or fifth on the story list on the evening news. I can assure you that the visit was not done simply for "the beauty of the day". What do you think Mahmoud and Hugo talked about? Chavez is a socialist who hates the United States. He has just nationalized the Venezuelan utility and telecommunication industries. He took care of the oil industry years ago. The "soon to be late" Fidel Castro is his mentor. And he has made several trips to Tehran on his own.

Look at your history to see parallels. Germany reached out to Japan and the Soviet Union (and yes, for reasons only known to Hitler, Italy), and signed non-aggression pacts and formed military alliances. Do you think Ahmandinejad was doing the same in Venezuela? No? Think again.

Believe it or not, Iran will soon face an oil crunch of its own. Although it has the second largest conventional oil reserves in the world, it has no refining capacity and there has been no improvement to its oil infrastructure since the fall of the Shah. Within 5 years it will be a net importer of oil. Venezuela has oil. Iran has medium range missiles. Looks like a match to me. Imagine the Cuban Missile crisis on steroids. Iranian missiles capped with Iranian nuclear warheads placed in Venezuela will be capable of hitting the southern United States. Houston, anyone?

What is even scarier is that socialism is on the march once again in the Americas. Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Nicaragua all have socialist governments, and Mexico was a hair's width away from joining them in last year's election. Do we really want Iran forging military alliances with these nations?

Historians called the Spanish Civil War the practice war for World War II. Iraq is the practice war for the coming main event with Iran. The more decisively we act now, and gird our loins and grit our teeth and suck it in, the less destruction will come later. Foreign policy should be decided on its own merits. Unfortunately, the left and the press have done this nation a grave disservice by masking their desire for a domestic agenda in the cloak of anti-war rhetoric. We will all pay the price.
