Romney, Religion, and Omaha

Today Mitt Romney gave his speech about faith. It was intended to quell issues relating to his Mormon religion. He made his point that no religion, including his own, would stand in the way of his doing what was right for America. But the speech was much more.

I am not a Romney supporter. But I know a good political speech when I hear one. Romney gave today what will go down in political annals as the definitive statement of Faith in America. It is a topic that politicians are hesitant to address. It is a topic that has been lost in this era of political correctness. It is a topic that goes to the root of the lost values that we so sorely need restored to gain back the soul of the country.

He said in part: “Perhaps the most important question to ask a person of faith who seeks a political office, is this: Does he share these American values — the equality of human kind, the obligation to serve one another and a steadfast commitment to liberty? They are not unique to any one denomination. They belong to the great moral inheritance we hold in common. They're the firm ground on which Americans of different faiths meet and stand as a nation, united. We believe that every single human being is a child of God — we're all part of the human family. The conviction of the inherent and inalienable worth of every life is still the most revolutionary political proposition ever advanced. John Adams put it that we are "thrown into the world all equal and alike."

The consequence of our common humanity is our responsibility to one another, to our fellow Americans foremost, but also to every child of God. It's an obligation which is fulfilled by Americans every day, here and across the globe, without regard to creed or race or nationality.”

His words go to the root of secularism which has robbed our country of its base values, its common humanity, and has given us in its place a quagmire of relativity in which our nation is rapidly sinking.

And we wonder why a 19 year old boy gets a gun and shoots and kills a bunch of people in a mall in Omaha. Look around you. Turn on the television. Parents more interested in themselves than their children. Phony standards of behavior blasted 24/7 over MTV. Total disregard for one’s own sexual behavior or one’s partner, whomever that happens to be on any given day. Schools handing out birth control pills to children without parents permission. States attempting to outlaw spanking, encouraging children to turn their parents in if there is an infraction. Schools, out of fear of legal entanglements, letting students run rampant over teachers and pushing education to the bottom of the priority list. Late term abortions on demand. Religion not only banned from the public square, but ridiculed by the intelligentsia. Constant mental stimulation from television to radio to Ipods to computers to video games, all telling impressionable young people this is how to live. This is a better way so long as we can sell male enhancement products.

Look at Romney’s words: “…every single human being is a child of God-we’re all part of the human family…the consequence of our common humanity is our responsibility to one another….to every child of God.”

How do we get that back?
